The National Research Council (CNR) is the leading public Italian research organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications.

At present, CNR is formed by 112 institutes, which are distributed all over the national territory and participates into the Project ADMACOM with the Institute for Energetics and Interphases (IENI). IENI operates over five units in Padoa, Milan, Genoa, Pavia and Lecco, with more than 120 personnel units.

IENI-Genoa, the unit engaged in this Project, is dedicated to studies related to ceramic materials, metal-ceramic systems and surfaces, and soft matter. The research Groups in Genoa participate in joint programs both at the European level (with ESA, E.C. FP6, FP7…) and at the national level (FIRB, FISR, PRIN, MSE ministerial projects).

In particular, the Group involved in this project has a long lasting experience in the following fields:

  • Prediction and design of physico-chemical and microstructural properties in hybrid metal-ceramic systems with particular reference to wettability of ceramics by liquid metals and/or alloys as a function of temperature, working atmospheres with special attention to oxygen partial pressure, and to impurities in the substrates.

  • Design of processes for metal-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic joints and production of metal-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic joints with strong inertia towards corrosion, high mechanical strength and high chemical stability at high temperatures. Mechanical characterization of joined samples by means of shear tests.

  • Development of thermodynamic and kinetic-diffusional models for description of interfacial phenomena. Prediction of metal-ceramic interphases by means of ab-initio calculations.

 In the IENI-Genoa, a laboratory exists where surface and interfacial tension and wettability measurements can be done in a temperature range from ambient to above 1500°C, capabilities available at only a very limited number of facilities in the world. The wetting experiments are carried out by the sessile drop method using apparatuses designed and built by CNR-IENI staff expressively for this purpose.

The characterization of interfaces, or more generically of materials, are performed by means of the following techniques available at the CNR-IENI:

  • Optical and electron (SEM/EDS) microscopy

  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM)

  • X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)

  • Micro-indentation

  • Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry
